THE INSIGHTS & REVELATIONS PERFORMANCE SERIES
World Class Artists...Up Close and Personal
Presents:

March 17, 2007, 8:00 p.m. at the Rosenthal JCC Theatre, 600 Bear Ridge Road, Pleasantville, NY 10570.

When it comes to storytelling, "Once upon a time?" is, well, once upon a time. A tale on the stage of "Liar" is more likely to begin, "It's Christmas morning and Dad's rummaging through our dead neighbor's stuff." Which is darkly funny, but is also disarmingly honest.
Or is it?

"Liar," about which Chelsea Now says: "Andy Christie has a true hit on his hands,” was founded by author/storyteller Andy Christie, and is the newest addition to New York City's growing storytelling scene that brings to the stage an oral tradition that was born around campfires and kitchen tables: just plain stories. Amusing, touching, or appalling. Now "Liar" brings something a little different to that table.

The Liar Show features four performers telling short, funny, personal stories. But listen carefully because, earnest as they may appear, one of them is pulling your leg. After the stories, audience members are given an opportunity to interrogate the performers and sniff out the fish story. Ballots are cast and winners receive a t-shirt and a discount coupon for the next presentation in The Insights & Revelations Performance Series.

As with all Insights & Revelations Performance Series presentations, a discussion and reception with the artists will follow the performance.

This presentation is sponsored by The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, Jacob Burns Foundation, The David Schwartz Foundation, Westchester Arts Council, The Art of Wine, Cold Stone Creamery, Jackson & Wheeler Restaurant & Bakery, Sir Speedy Printing Center, The Steel Mandoline, The Village Bookstore, and our Producer's Circle.

ABOUT LIAR

“Liar” shows are presented in New York City at The People's Improv Theater, the Cornelia Street Café and the DR2 Lounge. The shows aren't literary readings--the performers don't read, they "tell"--nor are they standup comedy, but the stories are as thoughtfully crafted as literature, and as entertainment, they're refreshingly direct and funny. And with "Liar" you get to play along. It's smart AND it's fun. How odd.

The Deep End's presentation of "Liar" will be hosted by Andy Christie and features storytellers James Braly (whom many of you know from last spring's sold-out presentation of Braly's "Life in a Marital Institution"), Mike Daisey, Peter Lubell, and Michaela Murphy.

Andy Christie is the the creator and host of “Liar.” He is co-author and illustrator of "I Wasn't Kidding" (Random House/Ballantine Books) as well as a featured Moth Main Stage storyteller (in New Haven and The Players Club in NYC), and four-time Moth Story Slam champion. His short stories & essays have appeared in literary journals and online (The Distillery; GSU Review; Mr. Beller's Neighborhood; Dan Kennedy's Really Small Talk, among others). Please visit www.andychristie.com.

James Braly has performed his autobiographical stories on NPR, and at The Whitney Museum, The Long Wharf Theatre and The Moth, where he is the only two-time winner of the GrandSLAM, a finalist in the national "What's Your Story?" contest sponsored by TNT, and a featured performer on The Moth National Story Tour. His monologue, “Life in a Marital Institution,” directed by Hal Brooks (“Thom Paine: Based on Nothing,” “No Child”), recently played at Ars Nova. Please visit www.JamesBraly.com.

Mike Daisey has been called “the master storyteller” and “one of the finest solo performers of his generation” by the New York Times for his acclaimed monologues, “21 Dog Years,” and “The Ugly American,” among others. He’s a commentator for NPR’s Day To Day and a contributor to the New York Times Magazine, WIRED, Slate and Salon. His new monologue, “Invincible Summer,” will be running at the Public Theater from Jan 18 though Jan 28. Please visit www.mikedaisey.com.

Peter Lubell has written, produced and directed for many television networks, and for National Public Radio. He's covered film festivals in print, worked as a jazz DJ in radio and told his stories onstage at The Moth and Speakeasy.

Michaela Murphy has told her stories at The Moth NYC (Mainstage, Story Slams, and The Trio Network, 2006 National Tour) Hearsay, Fired!, Speakeasy Stories, Second Stage Theater (Off-Broadway Show), The Atlantic Theater (with Lewis Black), Studio 360w/ Kurt Anderson,
NPR (All Things Considered), The Whitney Museum, The Center for Architecture, Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Lincoln Center. Michaela’s work as a playwright and actor has been featured at Manhattan Theater Club, The Ensemble Studio Theater, LaMAMA Theater, The 52nd Street Project, The Aspen Comedy Arts Festival, and the Clinton White House. She just shot the TV pilot “Turning Points” and currently is writing the young adult series Things I Learned In Charm School and a memoir, The Green Monster.
