The New York State Council on the Arts has just announced a 2007 award to The Deep End Productions to commission* a new play by nationally renowned playwright Kelly Stuart ("Demonology," "Life of Spiders").
Stuart's most recent play, "Shadow Language" was the inaugural presentation of The Deep End's Insights & Revelations Performance Series in May 2005. That play was commissioned by the prestigious Guthrie Theater artists' travel grant. Stuart chose to travel to Turkey and was inspired to write the wonderfully funny, and deeply important, play about the political landscape in the region. The presentation was both artful and thoughtful as scenes were performed by some of the city's best actors, along with a guest speaker from the New York Civil Liberties Union and an Iraqi artist that fled his homeland during Saddam Hussein's rule.
The Deep End is proud to be commissioning Stuart's next play, "The Disappearing World," which was presented in progress as part of the Insights & Revelations Performance Series in April 2007. "The Disappearing World" concerns a jealous girlfriend, a Kurdish musician, the Department of Homeland Security, cyberspying, and adultery...this could only add up in the outrageously creative imagination of Kelly Stuart, whose plays have won numerous awards and recognition across the country.
Stay tuned to this blog to find out more about the development of "The Disappearing World" and work-in-progress presentations.
* A commission means that The Deep End Productions will provide funds to the playwright to write the play. As a commissioner of the project, The Deep End also will host various kinds of presentations as the play develops and provide the playwright with a wide variety of artistic, financial, logistical, and production support in order to support the creative process.
